Saturday June 20, 2009 - Hershey State Meet, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA
Saving the best for last, NOVA A.C.’s 11-12 Boys and 13-14 Girls 4 X 100 Meter Relay teams became Hershey’s State Champions on Saturday, June 20. Competing in the Hershey’s Track & Field Games State Meet at University of Virginia’s Lannigan Field, in Charlottesville both teams from the Loudoun based track club set new club records on their way to victory.

The 11-12 boys team consisted of Leland Girdy, Alexander Galloway, Brandon Joyce and Ishmael Williams all of Ashburn. The race was a very close call from start to finish with all athletes performing well. On the final leg, Williams was under pressure from an athlete on his inside, but fought hard all the way to clinch the victory in a time of 56.64 seconds. Williams competed earlier in the day in the 100 Meters with teammate Samuel Morrison of Leesburg. Morrison finished 4th in 13.74, and Williams 5th in 13.84. Morrison also competed in the 11-12 Boys 200 Meters running a personal best time of 28.14 for 3rd place. Taking part in the 13-14 Boys 4 X 100 Meter Relay, Zac Kerns, Reed Mellon, both Ashburn, Aaron Randall, Leesburg and James McCray, Purcellville fought bravely through injuries to two of the runners to finish 5th.

In the 13-14 girls age group NOVA was represented in the 4x100 Meters by Hannah Keely and Keara Friberg, both Ashburn, Kaleigh Rosengarten, Aldie and Amy Bashioum, Purcellville. Fine sprinting, with good exchanges produced an excellent overall team performance and a winning time of 57.34. Both teams wait to hear if their times are fast enough for selection to the South East Regional Team which will travel to Hershey, Pennsylvania, to compete in the North America Final, on Saturday, August 1, 2009.

November 17, 2008 NOVA A.C. Qualifies Ten for Junior Olympic Cross Country Championship

The 2008 USATF Virginia Association Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Mechanicsville on Saturday, November 15 was a successful meet for Loudoun’s NOVA A.C. All ten of the team’s runners qualified to progress to the Junior Olympic Cross Country Championship which will be held at the same venue on December 13. They are expected to be among 3,000 youth runners traveling from all over the nation to compete.

The athletes were treated to an unseasonably warm and dry day. For the younger runners the course was fast and flat. The Youth, Intermediate and Young Men and Women age groups were challenged by an undulating, wooded section in the mid section of their races.

NOVA’s Bantam runners were the stars of the day. Having lead for most of the race, newcomer Jack Klimek from Round Hill, was just beaten to the finishing line by a mere second with a time of 12:09. Despite recent sickness Purcellville’s Noah Hunter ran a brave and determined race to finish in 11th place, qualifying him for the national event. Running in the same age group, Jennifer Crawford of Ashburn placed highest overall girl for the team in 3rd position with a time of 14:55 for the 3K course.

In the Midget age group, Peter Thompson, also from Round Hill, showed continuing progress with a fine 6th place finish in 12.13 for the 3K course. He was followed by Jackson Herwig of Purcellville in 13:04.

Ashburn’s Matt Panzica and Andrew Hayden finished 5th & 6th respectively in the Youth division in times of 15:06 and 15:11 for the 4K course. While Panzica has been training representing NOVA A.C. all season, Hayden returned after running cross country for Broad Run High School. Charlie Ann Krebs from Purcellville, also Youth ran 18:13 for 13th place, again safely making the Junior Olympic cut.

Following an excellent overall 3rd place in the Purcellville Turkey Trot the previous week, John Parker tested his ability against some of the best fifteen and sixteen year olds from Southern Virginia. Parker, of Philomont, completed the more challenging 5K course in 18:04 for 8th place. The same position was achieved by Emily Durant of Charles Town running 23:39 in the Young Women’s race.

July 11-13, 2008 - AAU Regional Track and Field Meet, Upper Marlboro, MD
Competing in the AAU Region 2B Track and Field Championships in Upper Malboro, MD July 11-13 all eleven of NOVA A.C.’s qualifiers earned top five places.

Leesburg’s Brian Dove set the standard early in the meet as the second fastest qualifier in the preliminary rounds of the Intermediate 100 Meters posting a time of 11:31. Despite the major set back of his starting blocks slipping, Dove recovered well to place fourth in the final. The highlight of the weekend for Dove however, was anchoring the Intermediate team of Edwin Mends (Leesburg) and Ashburn’s John Johnson and Derril Thomas to an exciting silver medal winning place in the 4 X 100 Meters with a new club record of 45.3.

Thomas was also in action in the Intermediate High Jump. Here he posted a new personal and club record of 5-10.00 to earn second spot. Thomas achievement is outstanding when considering that the fourteen year old only began jumping in April, and has not been able to practice over the bar since high schools closed in Mid-June. Also placing in the field events was Ashburn’s Mikayla Shields. Reaching a new personal record of 11-06.00 Shield’s finished fourth in the Bantam Girls Long Jump.

The 1500 Meters brought many successes for NOVA A.C. with all of the runners achieving personal records. Bantam runners Jennifer Crawford and Will Smagh both from Ashburn finished 5th and 2nd respectively. Matt Panzica produced the race of his youth career, finishing second with a fine closing kick. In the next age group up, Joe Lynch achieved a 3rd place in the Intermediate race. Lynch, a late starter to track, picked it up following the close of his high school baseball season. Both Lynch and Panzica live in Ashburn. Charlie Ann Krebs of  Purcellville demonstrated her ability to run well in two middle distance events over the weekend  finishing second in the youth girls 1500 Meter race and following up with a fourth place in the 800 Meters the next day. Other placings in the 800 Meters were Leesburg’s Logan Smith 5th in the Sub–Youth Boys and Will Smagh 6th in the Bantam Boys event.

With their top four finishing places Brian Dove, John Johnson, Charlie Ann Krebs, Edwin Mends, Joe Lynch, Matt Panzica, Mikayla Shields, Will Smagh and Derril Thomas qualified to attend the AAU Junior Olympics in Detroit, MI July 26 -August 2.

Further regional success has been gained by NOVA’s Dane Boegner of Ashburn.  Boegner won both the 11-12 years 400 Meters and 800 Meters at the Hershey’s Track and Field State Meet in June and has been selected from winners in nine states to represent the South East Region. Boegner will run in the 800 Meters at the Hershey’s Track and Field North American Final on Saturday, August 2. Boegner demonstrated that his preparations for the event are going well by placing first in the Midget Boys 800 Meters in a new personal best of 2:28 at the Cliff Wiley Track Classic in Columbia, MD on July 19. Also competing in this meet were Mikayla Shields who took first in the Bantam Girls Long Jump bettering her personal record to 12-01.00, and Alex Shields who placed 4th in the Sub- Bantam Boys 100 Meters in 16.3.

With only a short period of time for recovery, Boegner was back on the track for the 800 Meters. Smagh recorded 1:11. In the Girls’ race Jennifer Crawford ran strongly to finish second in 1:16. March 1, 2008 - Spring Outdoor Track Season starts March 9
Our first practice of the Spring season will be held on Sunday March 9 at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn from 3.30 - 4.45pm. Directions to Stone Bridge HS are available
here.

For training your child should wear good cushioned shoes designed specifically for running, and not basketball or tennis shoes which lack the support required. For all outdoor training sessions; dress in layers taking into account the forecast. Bring water bottles. We hold practice and run in the rain. Make sure you eat and drink something at least two hours before practice. It is a good idea to bring a snack, such as a cereal chewy bar, for immediately after practice to help with recovery.

If you have any questions about the season, our FAQ (http://www.novaac.org/qanda.htm) may help, or just ask via e-mail.

October 6, 2007 - Winter Conditioning Program
